This formula contains four famous recipes, all by Zhang Zhongjing, the sage of medicine, Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang, Wu Ling San, Xiao Chai Hu Tang, and She Gan Ma Huang Tang.
The first formula, Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang, is used to solve the problem of internal heat and fever in patients with a new COVID-19 patient. The composition of the formula of Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang: MaHuang, ZhiGanCao, XingRen, ShengShiGao
The MaHuang, in this formula, relieves the lungs' surface and opens the pores of the whole body, allowing the heat evil inside the lungs to come out from the skin, which is equivalent to opening the windows of the house and letting the stuffy air out. XingRen strengthens the purgative function of the lung, and the lung and large intestine are on the same level, driving heat from the lung to the large intestine and out of the large intestine. Then, use ShiGao to directly clear heat, equivalent to adding cool water to a boiling pot. ShiGao can both clear heat and generate fluid. ShiGao lowers stomach fire, lung fire, and large intestine fire, which can simultaneously bring out the fire in the body from the stool and bowels, respectively. Then GanCao saves fluid, supports righteousness, and nourishes the spleen and stomach.
The dosage of ShiGao is explained here; that is to say, if internal heat is severe and high fever can be used a little more, up to 30 grams; if low fever or no fever, ShiGao is used slightly less, with 15 grams. The second famous formula of Zhang Zhongjing contained in the QingFeiPaiDuTang is Wu Ling San: ZhuLing, FuLing, BaiZhu, ZeXie, and GuiZhi.
The primary purpose of putting Wu Ling San into this formula for treating patients with New COVID-19 is to dispel dampness. Chinese medicine has a consensus that dampness is the culprit of this plague and that dampness is the breeding ground for the New COVID-19 virus. However, we must not harm Yang energy to dispel dampness, so we use Wu Ling San, which warms Yang and transforms dampness.
Let's analyze how Wu Ling San dispels dampness. The first step is to warm Yang, which is the most important. When clothes are wet, we take them to the sun. Similarly, when our body is flooded with water and dampness, we must go to the sun. What is the sun of the body? Heart Yang is the sun of the human body. The gloom disperses when the sun comes out, and the earth becomes dry.
How can we strengthen our hearts, Yang? GuiZhi is the best medicine to enhance the Yang of the heart. It also has the effect of warming the meridians and opening up the channels so that water and dampness can be more easily dispersed, equivalent to repairing the ditch.
What is even better is that the Guizhi also has the effect of Qi. It is to turn the body's water and dampness into the fluid that our body needs; only fluid can nourish our body. If the water you drink does not become fluid, it is wastewater.
In addition to strengthening the heart Yang, Guizhi also has the effect of enhancing kidney Yang. When kidney Yang is sufficient, water dampness in the body is more easily warmed up and transpired into water vapor. Adequate heart Yang is also suitable for lung Yang because heart Yang is the sun and lung is the sky. Adequate heart Yang is also suitable for spleen yang. The heart is the mother of the spleen; the heart is fire; the spleen and stomach are earth, and fire produces soil.
In other words, one medicine of Gui Zhi can wonderfully strengthen Heart Yang, Lung Yang, Spleen Yang, and Kidney Yang.
In addition to warming Yang, we must also strengthen the spleen. Why do we need to support the spleen? Because the water comes from the earth. What is this earth? The earth is the spleen. So we need to strengthen the function of the earth, to strengthen the spleen and stomach. The spleen is the source of dampness. Huang Di Nei Jing has said that the treatment of dampness must treat the spleen because all dampness, swelling, and fullness belong to the spleen. If the spleen and stomach are not good, dampness will be produced continuously. So Zhang Zhongjing did not hesitate to take out his magic weapon to dispel dampness, Atractylodes Macrocephalae, which is warm and intense, the smell of which the spleen and stomach like best. Atractylodes can gasify water dampness in the spleen and stomach of the middle jiao and simultaneously force out water dampness at the muscle level so that your limbs are strong instead of your legs being as heavy as lead.
Zhang Zhongjing's second idea is to treat water directly to the body's wastewater through the urine to drain out. Zhang Zhongjing used three diuretic and water-relieving herbs: FuLing, ZhuLing, and Ze Xie. FuLing can drain the wastewater from the spleen and stomach in the Zhong jiao. At the same time, ZeXie is a bit more potent than Fu Ling and colder, which can drain the wastewater from the kidneys and bladder in the Xiao jiao. The power is more fierce in Zhuling. Zhuling does not have any particular taste. This taste is very light, and even tasteless medicine has beneficial effects; Zhuling is cold, cold can go down, and can benefit water.
This is the idea of Wu Ling San, warming Yang and promoting water, on the one hand, warming Yang, on the other hand, directly promoting water. Warming Yang is to support righteousness is the root of the treatment, and diuresis is to attack the evil to treat the symptoms.
The third famous formula in QingFeiPaiDuTang is Xiao Chai Hu Tang: Chai Hu, HuangQi, BanXia, GanCao, and ShengJiang.
Xiao Chai Hu Tang is the most famous formula of all, and many old herbalists rely on Xiao Chai Hu Tang and have been using it all their lives. Xiao Chai Hu Tang is not only for treating wind-heat colds but also for treating many complex and miscellaneous diseases in this world, and it can be used for all symptoms that are half-epidemic and half-liberal. Xiao Chai Hu Tang mainly addresses conditions in the half-epidermal and half-liberal zones and prevents evil from entering the half-epidermal and half-liberal areas.
Xiao Chai Hu Tang has three groups of medicines. The first group of drugs, Chai Hu and HuangQi, opens up this zone of the half-epidermis and half-li, allowing the evil Qi to go out and remove the liver and gall bladder fire.
The liver and gallbladder belong to the half-table and half-li area, and the positive qi and the evil qi are stagnant in the half-table and half-li area, so a medicine like Chai Hu is needed to mediate and disperse. Chai Hu also has an ascending power, which means that its medicinal properties are upward and can assist the positive Qi to drive out the evil Qi. It has an unmistakable aroma, not very strong and light, in the middle, so this medicine does not go to the surface nor the inside, but mainly to the half surface and half inside.
HuangQi is bitter and enters the heart to remove the heart fire. HuangQi is cold, and cold moves downward to clear the fire of the gall bladder and stomach. Chai Hu and HuangQi are good partners. Chai Hu rises, HuangQi descends, so the liver increases, the gall bladder falls, and the liver-biliary system works.
The second group of herbs is BanXia. Ban Xia is mainly used in this formula to lower the rebellion. For example, our stomach Qi has to descend. If the stomach Qi does not fall but goes upward, there will be symptoms of hiccups and vomiting, which is upward rebellion. The abdomen is in harmony with the descending. For example, bile Qi should also descend. If bile Qi does not drop, symptoms such as bitterness in the mouth, dizziness, and bile reflux will occur. Dry throat, mouth irritation, dizziness, vomiting, etc. These symptoms can be regulated with Ban Xia, which is the main symptom of controlling the upward rebellion of stomach Qi.
The third group of drugs: RenShen, ShengJiang, ZhiGancao
As mentioned before, the symptoms of the half table and half li are mainly due to the weakness of the spleen and stomach, which leads to the lack of connection between the table and the stomach and the up and down. So what is used to open up the Zhong jiao and restore the transport function of the spleen and stomach? Zhang Zhongjing used RenSheng, ShengJiang, and ZhiGancao herbs to enter the spleen and stomach and quickly replenish the spleen and stomach's fluids. When the spleen and stomach function are restored, a constant flow of Qi and blood will be generated to fight against evil.
The fourth famous formula contained in QingFeiPaiDuTang is Shegan Mahuang Tang: Shegan, MaHuang, ShengJiang, XiXin, ZiWan, KunDongHua and BanXia.
This Shegan Mahuang Tang is used here to promote the lung and resolve phlegm to stop cough. Cough is one of the most acute symptoms in patients with new COVID-19. Many of the herbs in this recipe resolve phlegm and relieve coughs, such as KuanDongHua and ZiWan.MaHuang and XiXin promote the lung, spicy, and warmth to relieve symptoms. SheGan is to clear the throat and regulate the sore throat caused by heat toxicity.
The last four herbs in QingFeiPaiDuTang are ShanYao, ZhiShi, Chen Pi, and HuoXiang. ShanYao supports righteousness, protects the spleen and stomach, and prevents this formula from being a bit warm and dry. ZhiShi is used to relieve chest congestion, reduce Qi, break Qi, and, at the same time, make the patient's bowels flow more freely. Chen Pi and Huo Xiang are used to dissolve dampness and aromatize dampness, and Huo Xiang has made many appearances in this epidemic. Chen Pi and Huo Xiang can also address the patient's gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating and diarrhea.
This is QingFeiPaiDuTang, with an efficiency of 90%. The whole formula is primarily warm and has very few cold herbs, proving that this plague belongs to the cold and damp epidemic. The Chinese Traditional Medicine Administration (CCMA) advises that this formula must be taken with traditional Chinese medicine tablets, decocted in water, one dose per day, once in the morning, and twice in the evening (40 minutes after meals), taken warm.
